The unforgettable photograph of Marilyn Monroe standing over a subway vent with a gust of air billowing through her white dress is one of the best-known works by New York-based photographer Sam Shaw and, of course, is part of the nearly 200 images that make up the exhibition Sam Shaw: 60 Years of Photography. A retrospective that spans the more than six-decade career of this renowned and prolific photographer, covering photojournalism, portraits and the film industry.

Shaw portrayed almost every major film stars of his time as well as musicians, artists, writers and intellectuals, always trying to capture the moment with an innovative perspective using view-point angles more typical of cinematic language.

The exhibition includes both rare never-before-seen photographs and others as famous as the image of Marlon Brando with his torn t-shirt in the film A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and began its world tour at the Cascais Cultural Centre under the auspices of the D. Luís I Foundation.

Present at the opening were Edie Shaw Marcus, Meta Shaw Stevens e Melissa Stevens (daughters and granddaughter of Sam Shaw, respectively) and Lorie Karnath, long-time friend and author of the exhibition catalogue.
