The Turbulence exhibition, displayed at the East Tower Gallery of the Cordoaria Nacional (National Ropework Factory) from 8 September to 3 December 2017, is drawn from the Contemporary Art Collection of the Spanish banking foundation La Caixa, and is curated by its director, Nimfa Bisbe. The exhibition, which features a selection of more than 40 works by artists from different geopolitical contexts, forms part of the programme for Past and Present – Lisbon, Ibero-American Capital of Culture 2017.

The name of the exhibition, ‘turbulence’, is adapted from the name of one of the works included within it – Turbulent, created in 1998 by Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat. It is a video installation which prompts reflection on issues of gender inequality and cultural oppression in fundamentalist societies. Creating turbulence and provoking public concern is also key in the other works exhibited, by artists including Carlos Amorales (Mexico), Carlos Garaicoa (Cuba), Paulo Nazareth (Brazil), Asier Mendizabal (Spain), Adrian Paci (Albania) and Thomas Hirschhorn (Switzerland), among many others. All of the works, without exception, constitute narratives of social critique on the contradictions of the modern world. The exhibition is presented as an itinerary guided by urgent, divisive questions which encourage visitors to reflect – and if possible, to change.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by Fernando Medina, President of Lisbon City Council, and Catarina Vaz Pinto, Councillor for Culture.
