Terra Esplêndida and The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards
in partnership with the Centro Português de Fotografia (CPF), present:

The Comedy Wildlife – Photography Exhibition

Centro Português de Fotografia

15.07.23 | 29.10.23

The Comedy Wildlife” exhibition presents, at the Centro Português de Fotografia in Porto, a careful selection of photographs from the various editions of the prestigious international photography award, one of the funniest and most important photography competitions in the world.

About 150 award-winning images promise to captivate and entertain the whole family with their humor, which will bring many smiles and even laughs, involving the audience in the enchantment of wildlife.

These photographs, and the species represented here, are also a way of making us aware of the extraordinary diversity of life on our planet, and of alerting us to the serious crisis it is going through.

It is estimated that more than a quarter of the species on our planet are at risk of extinction. Some groups are more threatened than others. Amphibians, for example (like the frogs found in this exhibition) are one of the animal groups most affected by habitat destruction, pollution, the introduction of invasive species, among many other threats posed by humanity. But no animal group escapes – mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects. Many plants are also at risk of extinction, and even entire ecosystems.

The exhibition therefore encourages us, when looking at a “smiling” frog, or a “dancing” marmot in these photographs, to think that other animals, like us, should be able to celebrate life.

“The Comedy Wildlife” Photography Awards came to life in 2015, from the desire of wildlife photographers Tom Sullam and Paul Joynson-Hicks — sharing a passion for wildlife and years of experience living and working in the African continent — to bring attention to environmental conservation in a unique way: through humor.

The images are extremely popular, appealing to all ages and transcending cultures and languages, and convey a strong message about the importance of environmental sustainability, and the protection of endangered species.

With this goal in mind, in addition to offering audiences a fun and educational experience, “The Comedy Wildlife” award and exhibition also works with and supports international institutions engaged with animal protection. To that extent, part of the ticketing revenue from this presentation in Porto will revert to The Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA).
