The exhibition Roger Ballen: My Mind is a Cage gathers, in an unprecedented exhibition in Portugal, the work of the acclaimed North American photographer based in South Africa.
Curated by Ângela Ferreira, the exhibition features 50 photographs and some videos from the author’s main series, produced between 1980 and 2020. Roger Ballen: My Mind is a Cage is a unique and experimental production exclusively designed for the CPF – Portuguese Centre for Photography, and part of the author’s long standing desire to present his work in the different cells of the building of the Old Prison and Court of Appeal of Porto, creating an immersive experience that transports the visitors to a world of true enigma.
Despite the diversity of Ballen‘s work, his photographs maintain unity as they are both associated with the aesthetics of the grotesque and impregnated with surrealism, and constitutes the unique universe that the artist calls “Ballenesque”.
