1000 Families The Family Album of Planet Earth

A family album for our planet… What a simple and marvellous idea!, exclaimed my friends, adding (with a touch of envy): And you are going to have to travel around the world!” (Uwe Ommer)

The 1000 Families – The Family Album of Planet Earth exhibition was the brainchild of the German photographer Uwe Ommer, who travelled the five continents between 1996 and 2000, aiming to create a “family album” for our planet.

This event in Lisbon displayed 100 photographs selected from thousands of negatives, including families from the Masai tribe in Kenya, farmers from Syria, the family of an imam in Mali, potato growers from Colombia and the Ukraine, sailors from Mexico, office employees from Brunei, members of the Amish community, among many other portraits of families from around the world.

Uwe Ommer observed and assimilated the bonds of affection of these family units and their different ways of living on our planet, creating what can be considered to be a veritable breath of fresh air in sociological, anthropological and – above all – human terms.

The open-air street exhibition was initially scheduled to run for only a month but continued for four months due to the huge flow of public, being seen by large numbers of visitors.
