William Shakespeare in Portuguese Culture

Celebrating the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth, the D. Luís I Foundation held a gathering, on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of October in the auditoriums of the Cascais Cultural Centre and the Museum Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, where various art forms collaborated to celebrate the life and work of an artist whose creative impact reaches far beyond his time.

An unavoidable influence on so many of his contemporaries and writers subsequently, Shakespeare enjoys a deserved reputation as one of the world’s most influential playwrights.

The programme of this cultural initiative includes excerpts from opera, a performance of Scene V of the 1st Act of Hamlet, translated in 1877 by King D. Luís I, patron of the Foundation, the projection of films, recitation of sonnets and a series of six lectures given by some of the most illustrious Portuguese scholars of the bard’s vast body of work.
