Through a Different Lens Stanley Kubrick Photographs

The exhibition Through a Different Lens – Stanley Kubrick Photographs, which revealed to the Portuguese public a lesser-known facet of one of the biggest names in the history of cinema, was on display at the Cascais Cultural Center between February 26 and May 22, 2022, an initiative of the D. Luís I Foundation and the Municipality of Cascais within the program of the Museum Quarter.

Before becoming one of the most influential directors of all time with definitive films like “Shining”, “A Clockwork Orange” and “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Kubrick worked for Look magazine, a publication in New York, where he built a fascinating photographic portfolio. 130 of his photographs, some of them never before published, were reunited in this exhibition by curators Sean Corcoran and Donald Albrecht from the archives of the Museum of the City of New York.

His photographs for the magazine and which were featured in Through a Different Lens – Stanley Kubrick Photographs ranged from quirky stories about New York and its inhabitants to profiles of celebrities and athletes, always investigating and expanding the powerful narrative capabilities of photography and revealing his ability to visually translate the complexity of the human experience.
