9 ideias Parque Praça de Espanha

The exhibition 9 Ideas – Praça de Espanha Park, exhibited at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Museum from mid-December 2017 to the end of February 2018, recalls the past and plans for the future of Praça de Espanha: one side of the exhibition area displays a timeline of the history of the square; the other side features nine proposals by finalists in the International Ideas Competition organised by Lisbon City Council for the urban park which is intended to be created in this area of the city.

Praça de Espanha will cease to be one of the sticking points for traffic in the Portuguese capital, becoming a place for entertainment and leisure instead. In the centre of the square, which will cover an area of around 45,000 m2, one of the play areas depicted in the architectural projects exhibited will be created. Some of the common features of all of the proposals are the presence of green spaces, areas of water (intended to make use of and drain the Alcântara stream, which flows below the square), kiosks, leisure areas, clearings and walkways.

Alongside the presentation of the projects, a public consultation was launched to collect suggestions and criticism from citizens concerning the proposals on display. After the end of this phase, a new competition will take place, in which the projects must implement the ideas proposed for Lisbon’s inhabitants. It is estimated that the works to renovate Praça de Espanha will begin in February 2019.
