Between November 16, 2024 and February 16, 2025, the Centro Cultural de Cascais presented the exhibition “Nicholas Nixon – Fundación MAPFRE Collections”, the largest retrospective of the work of the American photographer Nicholas Nixon (Detroit, USA, 1947) held to date worldwide.
Curated by Carlos Gollonet, chief curator of the Fundación MAPFRE Collections, the exhibition brought together around 200 photographs, taken between 1974 and 2022, presented chronologically and grouped into thematic groups – from the cold urban photographs from the beginning of his career to the portraits of the Brown sisters. This was, in fact, the first time that the extraordinary series “The Brown Sisters”, one of the most important works of contemporary photography and undoubtedly one of the most powerful and moving reflections on the passage of time in the history of photography, was exhibited in its entirety.
A master of a technique perfected over the years, Nicholas Nixon photographs using large-format cameras, which require proximity and cooperation from his subjects. Up close, the photographer explores the descriptive potential of the camera to compose images that show the visible to reveal the intangible: love, passion, happiness, suffering, intimacy, the passage of time, loneliness. Without stereotypes, Nixon’s images bring out the humanity and emotions contained in the expressions of his subjects.
TE was responsible for the media relations for the exhibition.
