Juan Genovés The Intensity of Silence

The exhibition Juan Genovés – The Intensity of Silence brought to Portugal, for the first time, the work of the painter Juan Genovés (1930 – 2020), recognized as one of the most important names in contemporary Spanish art. Presented by the Cascais Cultural Center, in an initiative of the D. Luís I Foundation and the Municipality of Cascais within the program of the Museum Quarter, the exhibition was on view between 4 June and 11 September 2022.

Curated by Maria Toral, the show featured 58 works that reveal a restless and provocative painter, aware of the artist’s role in society and the importance of art as a vehicle for transformation. Born in Valencia, Spain in 1930, Genovés grew up under the fascist regime of Franco, which profoundly influenced his artistic output. His canvases, in addition to being aesthetically fascinating, are deeply rooted in social and political realism and have become a symbol of the democratic vindication and anti-Franco struggle in Spain.

The exhibition Juan Genovés – The Intensity of Silence shows us an artist capable of reflecting “silenced realities” in his paintings, using art as a social instrument, a witness to reality and a moral compass.
