Margaret Watkins Black Light

The Fundação D. Luís I – Centro Cultural de Cascais presented, for the first time in Portugal, the work of the Canadian photographer Margaret Watkins (1884 – 1969).

Margaret Watkins – Black Light presents a selection of 136 vintage photographs and photomontages made between 1914 and 1939 – in addition to documents, objects and a documentary film about the photographer, composing a captivating portrait of a woman that, within the broad social and cultural landscape of the 20th century, helped to shape the history of photography.

Some of the most emblematic images of Watkins’ work, such as “The Kitchen Sink” (1919), “Still life – Bathtub” (1919) and “Domestic Symphony” (1919) were part of the selection presented in Cascais and are undeniable examples of why, despite belated recognition, her work is currently considered fundamental to the history of photography by specialists and art critics.
